I have previously mentioned homemade gifts that I have made and would give to others for the holidays. Today though, I wanted to share a great homemade gift I received. My friend Krista made and gave me this cranberry infused vodka as a holiday gift this past weekend. Before even getting to try the vodka, I loved the gift because the packaging was beautiful. I didn’t want to open the bottle and lose the perfect look of the cranberry filled bottle with the cranberry colored vodka and the bow fastened to the top (but then it was infused vodka, so I really did want to open the bottle).
Krista had the great idea of adding her suggestion for what to mix with the vodka to the tag attached to the bottle. The tag read: “tonic, ginger ale, or sprite”. I tried it mixed with just a splash of ginger ale and it was delicious! I expected it to have a bit of a sour taste but instead it had the perfect hint of sweetness to it. Since the cranberries had been soaking in the vodka for about a full day, the vodka was infused with the cranberry juice and created this deep cranberry color.
To make this, you will need a bottle which Krista bought from Ikea (you can find it here). Whatever bottle you use, it is important that you find a bottle with a tight fitting stopper. You then poke holes in fresh cranberries and fill the bottle with the cranberries. The amount of cranberries you use is really up to you. The more you add, the more flavor you will infuse into the vodka. Then, add a tablespoon of sugar to the bottle. Finally, fill the bottle with whatever vodka you prefer. Since the vodka will be covered by the infused flavor, you don’t have to use the top shelf vodka.
If you are gifting, I love the idea of adding your mixer suggestion to the gift tag. If you are heading to any parties and need a hostess gift, this is a perfect one since your hostess can open, serve and enjoy at the party.
